The Eagle and the Dragon in Africa: Stability and Economic Development in Sub-Saharan Africa

November 3-4, 2011
The United States and China are Africa’s most important bilateral partners. Both countries have a vested interest in Africa’s success. However, their respective interests in Africa are more often than not framed as competitive, for instance, over Africa's vast natural resources and its emerging markets.  As well, they are often seen as taking different and competing approaches in dealing with Africa-the so called "Washington Consensus" versus the "Beijing Consensus." This conference takes a different tack.  While acknowledging the well worn argument that China and the U.S. compete in Africa, this conference will explore the areas where there may be common interests and objectives. It will bring together African, Chinese, and U.S. experts.
